Recently, the academic journal Sociální studia/Social Studies published a special issue on “Rural Sociology”. The volume gives an overview of recent studies in rural sociology, which cover different aspects of rurality and rural change. Via case studies in Estonia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Spain it shows the challenges that rural communities face today as well as the different strategies to cope with them. The compendium also includes an article that is authored by Geomedia PhD student Bianka Plüschke-Altof, in which she outlines the conceptual framework and first results of her research work in Estonia. Under the title “Rural as Periphery per se?” she analyzes the debates that evolve around rural peripheries in Estonian media discourse.
